Pittsburgh Hoops World Classic Now a Combined High School Basketball Event

Two high school basketball institutions in Western Pennsylvania have joined forces for one exciting event this spring. The Western Pennsylvania Girls High School Roundball Classic and the Pittsburgh Hoops Classic have combined their annual events into one day-long basketball extravaganza, now jointly titled the Pittsburgh Hoops World Classic.

The Pittsburgh Hoops World Classic will be held on Saturday, April 17th at Petersen Events Center on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh, beginning at 2 p.m.

Bob Gallagher, President of the Western Pennsylvania Youth Basketball Club, Inc., and Chairman of the Pennsylvania Girls High School Roundball Classic since inception in 1991 says, "By combining the Classics, we're creating opportunities for both boys and girls to showcase their wonderful skills to a larger audience at the first-class Petersen Events Center. We are delighted with this excellent opportunity for the players and look forward to a wonderful event. "

Tickets for the day-long event are $5 and are good for admission to all four games. The game schedule is as follows -

2 p.m. Girls North Team All-Stars vs South Team All Stars
4 p.m. Girls West Team All-Stars vs East Team All-Stars

    6 p.m. Boys Western Pennsylvania All-Star Game
    8 p.m. Boys USA International All-Stars vs Pennsylvania All-Stars

Forty-eight female players from across the region will compete in the afternoon games with the local boys' all-star game beginning at 6 p.m. The evening will conclude with a showcase of top high school talent from across the nation - many of whom are recruits to major Division I colleges - versus Pennsylvania's finest.

WNBA at PEC hosted by the Western Pennsylvania Youth Basketball Club... Girls Basketball at Its Best

The Pittsburgh Hoops World Classic is the first part of a two-fold partnership between the Western Pennsylvania Youth Basketball Club, Inc. and the Petersen Events Center. The Petersen Events Center is the site of a WNBA pre-season event, which will be hosted by the Western Pennsylvania Youth Basketball Club, Inc. The Minnesota Lynx, coached by Pittsburgh native Susie McConnell-Serio, and the Detroit Shock, featuring McKeesport High School graduate Swin Cash, will play in Pittsburgh's first WNBA game ever on May 15th.

Tickets for the Pittsburgh Hoops World Classic go on sale Friday, March 12 at 10 a.m. at all Ticketmaster ticket centers including Kaufmann's and select Giant Eagles, charge-by-phone at 412-323-1919, online at www.ticketmaster.com or at the Petersen Events Center (day of show only). Tickets for the WNBA Detroit Shock vs Minnesota Lynx start at $12.50 and are on sale now.

In 1965, Pittsburgh played host to the first ever Annual Boys Roundball Classic. Prior to this time, no other city in the United States had hosted such an exciting event. In keeping with tradition, in 1991 Pittsburgh and the Western Pennsylvania Youth basketball Club, Inc. became the first hosts of the Pennsylvania Girls High School Roundball Classic. The first annual Pennsylvania Girls High School Roundball Classic sparked a renewed interest in girls basketball that grew from a flicker to a flame in just a few short months.

The "Classic" features the brightest stars the Keystone State has to offer. There are two games. The first is the North South Contest, which is comprised of 24 players from Western Pennsylvania. The second feature game is the best from Eastern Pennsylvania vs. Western Pennsylvania.

"Thank you for your gracious hospitality at the Roundball Classic. I will treasure the experience all my life. I feel honored that I was asked to partake in such a magnificient event"
Carolyn Bull - Roundball Classic Participant

Since 1994, Eat'n Park Hospitality Group has been the title sponsor. We have hosted a "Classic" every year, with 726 Seniors participating in the event. Our next Roundball Classic will take place in April of 2003. Please contact us for more information on this exciting event.
